STARTING HORSES

Young horses, just like our children, need consistent, clear direction to understand what is expected of them. Let me ask each of you a few questions:

1) Would you like to have a willing horse?
2) Would you like to have a horse with great manners?
3) Would you like to develop a Partnership with your horse?
4) Would you like a calm & enthusiastic dance partner?
5) Would you like to be in Harmony with your horse?
6) Would you like to learn all this NATURALLY?

Then "you" will want to learn naturally at jans-tlc.

Pintos, Paints or Pintabians?    Please explain???

Although many people use the words Pinto and Paint interchangeably to describe a horse with large non-symmetrical spots, there is a difference.  Pintos and paints are grouped into two spotting patterns called tobiano (TOE-bee-AH-no) and overo (oh-VAYR-oh).  The difference between these two patterns can be described at another time.

The Pinto Horse Association recognizes different types of horses (such as "stock", "hunter", "saddle", and "pleasure") rather than one distinct type and, because of this, many authorities consider them a registry, rather than a breed.

Paints are basically "stock" in type and must have registered Paint, Quarter Horse or Thoroughbred parents.  In fact, many people prefer to describe a Paint as a "Quarter Horse with spots".

Those same people would probably describe the Pintabian (pin-TAY-bee-an) as an "Arabian with spots".  It is a breed of horse with tobiano markings (not overo) and Arabian "type".  Two solid coloured horses cannot produce a tobiano.  Therefore, it was developed by continually crossing tobianos back to purebred Arabian horses until a relatively pure strain of spotted horses with nearly 100% Arabian blood was obtained (like our KOL).  Purebred Arabians are also eligible for registration to allow for additional bloodlines (Kol’s Dam, SCARLET ANGEL) and, like Pintos and Paints, horses without the desired markings are registered as breeding stock.

Pintabians are characteristically known for their beauty, stamina, intelligence, versatility and good disposition.  They have a distinctive appearance which includes a head with a "dished" face and large, wide-set eyes.  The neck is arched, the back short and strong, the hip relatively level and the tail carriage high.  They generally stand between 14.2 and 15.2 hands and weigh between 900 and 1,100 pounds.

Pintabians are ideal for pleasure, showing, competitive and endurance sports, racing, driving, etc. and make wonderful family horses as well.

Further information on Pintabians is available by writing to the Pintabian Horse Registry, P.O. Box A, Karlstad, MN 56732.
