Have you ever had a dream...that really started after 40 years of age .... and then it evolved into your life - and you wonder why you took so long?

Becoming a teacher of horses and their owners. Now that's an achievable dream! But how to be the best? Read on...

I had always loved Horses (like all of you reading this) and I met my beautiful black National Show Horse mare, Salina Bey. I needed a farm for her (and the other horses who just seemed to "appear"!!) and after getting that farm, and with life's changes, I sold and moved just down the road to a beautiful hilly property with a wonderful man - Russell Clark ... and that's how our facility called B.C. 'natural horse' Place - jAN's Teaching and Learning Centre (www.jans-tlc.com) evolved.

My Mom and my best friend, Jean, surprised me with a "horse" design by way of a huge Logo Horse at jans-tlc silhouette. This silhouette graces the entrance of our Coverall arena (it is pictured below).

As you all know, when you have a mare, you breed her and your horse numbers GROW. As did ours....

Meanwhile, my beautiful black mare (I loved the Black Stallion books when I was a kid) was "quite" a horse - with high emotions and not really controllable. So the question: What to do/how to work with this beautiful creature and not got hurt?

My search began for learning. As a teacher in my prior life I wanted something "I" could do with my horse, not send her to a trainer who would do it for me. Isn't that what we ALL want, to be able to teach our horses? And of course, there was that "money" thing. So the search began for a program to teach me to teach my horse ....

I found John Lyons' methods at Appaloosa Crossing in Parkhill. Then, better yet, I learned of Gail Haynes, the only double certified John Lyons' trainer in Canada, and she lived in Oakville!!

And then, even better yet, I say Pat and Linda Parelli at Equine Affaire in Columbus, Ohio and immediately I knew this was the progam I was looking for and I began my journey to learn Pat Parelli's NATURAL HORSE-MAN-SHIP. Why? you might be asking. What I saw and felt while watching Pat and Linda and their team perform awed me - and inspired me like nothing ever has.

From that moment on I knew that I wanted to learn this program and teach this program if I could. Natural Horse-man-ship has progressed my knowledge about horses, but suprisingly, and most interesting, it has taught me: patience, feel, timing, no brace .... and so much more. And I wish I could tell you the journey is easy, but it isn't. Fortunately it is worth the pain that growth brings to us humans. Natural horsemanship has positively affected me, my teaching and my riding.

I am learning SAVVY - and being successful. And my horse is my partner now - and that has been well and truly worth the journey - and this journey will go on until I die. And now I am starting my next partner whose name is Rhome (see picture below), a 5 year old Canadian gelding. And what took me at least three years to teach my first horse, Salina - right brain extrovert (and my sacrificial lamb) has taken three months to teach Rhome. Some of it is his horsenality (left brain extrovert/introvert) but it is 'me' that has improved and learned how to help a horse be calm, smart, brave and athletic.

In November 2010 I audited and then rode with Linda Parelli in the Game of Contact. Zero brace --- so simple and yet .... and I am looking forward to 2011 to guide and encourage my students to understand this and to progress their knowledge and their feel. Tom Dorrance referred to feel as "IT". That is how subtle and intriguing IT is.

You CAN do everything you ever dreamed of doing with your horse - AND MORE.

Salina's reward

There are many methods and ways to teach your horse.

Natural Horse-Man-Ship is the path
I have chosen .
